Updating the App

The Virto Alerts App, formerly being the Add-in, has undergone significant changes. It now uses Azure for authorization, requiring users to grant permissions to the app and update it accordingly.

Authorization#

The app now uses Azure AD for authorization. You may need to grant additional permissions:

Log in to Azure AD as a tenant administrator.
Go to the SharePoint site -> Documents, where the Virto Alerts App is installed.
Click on the ribbon and select “Virto Alerts”.

Permissions Required for Application

The Virto Alerts application requires both Delegated and Application permissions.

Delegated Permissions#

Delegated permissions are used to authorize users and manage frontend functionalities such as alerts.

Application Permissions#

Application permissions are used for background services. Specifically, they are required for:

Handling List Changes and Generating Emails: This involves reading users, groups, and SharePoint list items based on alert configurations.
Updating List Webhook Subscriptions: To receive notifications of list changes, the application requires permissions similar to “List.Manage.” However, since this specific permission is not available via the API, “Sites.Manage.All” is requested instead.

Step-by-Step: How to Remove Alerts & Reminders

Reinstall the App (if it’s already been removed):
In order to delete the alerts properly, the app needs to be active. So, if it’s already uninstalled, you’ll need to install it again temporarily.
Delete All Alerts and Reminders Manually:
Once the app is reinstalled, go into the app and delete all alerts and reminders you’ve created. Unfortunately, this part can’t be automated on our side – it has to be done manually.
Remove the App from Your Environment:
After all alerts have been deleted, you can go ahead and remove the app from your environment. Keep in mind: uninstalling the app will also disconnect it from your SharePoint lists.

Once the app is removed, please drop us a line at support@virtosoftware.com. We’ll then clean up any remaining backend data on our side so everything is nice and tidy.

You can see your current license status in the “Subscription” tab. Ten alerts are free. A Virto license is required to create more than ten alerts in one site collection. In the “Subscription” tab, you can choose an appropriate plan and purchase your licenses.

Installing the Alerts and Reminders app

To install Alerts and Reminders by Virto to your SharePoint site, go to the site you’d like to add it to and click “New.” Then select “App” from the drop-down menu.

Add an app

Choose “From SharePoint Store” and click “Find more apps in the SharePoint Store.” Search for Alerts and Reminders by Virto.

Open the SharePoint Store

Find the Alerts and Reminders by Virto app and click on it.
